Hey there, music time-travelers!
Buckle up because we’ve stumbled upon a piece of local musical history. Picture this: it’s a Saturday night, May 7, 1994 – the Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga is buzzing with anticipation. The man of the hour? None other than the legendary Bob Dylan.
We’ve got our hands on an audio recording of the entire show. The unknown (and unsung) audience member hero shared the vibes of that night on Bob Dylan forums under the name “net taper a,” and from there, the recording found its way to the ultimate treasure trove – YouTube.
Nightly Moth, a YouTube channel that archives Bob Dylan interviews, radio shows, unreleased recordings posted the show recording in May of 2023.
The sound quality is impressive, with Dylan’s vocals and all instrumentation remaining clear throughout the recording. While there is some audience chatter in certain parts, if you have any experience with audience recordings, it’s unlikely that you will find it too bothersome.
The Chattanooga concert was in a run of shows that saw stops in Bristol, TN, Spartansburg SC, and Memphis where Dylan played the Beale Street Music Festival, before setting off to Japan and Europe. He clocked a whopping total of 109 shows across 12 countries that year.
So, kick back, hit play, and let Dylan’s timeless tunes whisk you away while also enjoying a piece of Chattanooga’s musical history, thanks to an anonymous audience member who recorded it all.
