Jaron Utt Reflects on Vulnerability and Showing Emotion in New Single ‘I Stayed Cool’
Jaron Utt, originally from Hayesville, North Carolina, has been quietly establishing himself as one of Chattanooga’s most talented songwriters. Whether working solo or with the more upbeat indie-pop band Walter Slide, Utt consistently delivers compelling songs.
His 2021 debut, In Case I Don’t See You, is a seven-track blend of deeply personal and universally resonant songwriting.
Now, Utt is back with “I Stayed Cool,” his first release in three years, and the lead single from a forthcoming EP. The song starts with a gentle buildup before erupting into a restrained, almost hesitant distortion.
In a post announcing the release, Utt revealed the song stems from his reflections on a time when he struggled to share his emotions, even with those closest to him:
“Even though I didn’t know it when I wrote it, this song is my attempt to voice that flaw and sit with it. … Knowing it might resonate with someone else is such a gift.”
