Experience an intimate show with the iconic songwriter from The Modern Lovers in Chattanooga March 17th
Jonathan Richman, a true pioneer of alternative rock and a musical storyteller like no other, is bringing his one-of-a-kind performance to Barking Legs Theater on March 17, 2025.
He’ll be joined by drummer and longtime collaborator Tommy Larkins.
Known for his early work with The Modern Lovers and his decades-long solo career, Richman remains a beloved and influential figure in music.
The show starts at 7:30, and tickets are available here. Early purchase is highly recommended.
The Modern Lovers’ 1976 debut album set the tone for punk and new wave, with stripped-down instrumentation and honest, witty lyrics that still captivate listeners today. Tracks like “Roadrunner” and “Pablo Picasso” are not just cult classics—they’re cornerstones of an era.

Over the years, he’s carved out a solo career marked by warmth, humor, and a commitment to simplicity. His songs often feel like intimate conversations, blending whimsy with moments of profound reflection.
Albums like I, Jonathan and Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love showcase his ability to balance playfulness with vulnerability, creating music that resonates across generations.
A Performance Like No Other
Richman himself offers insight into what to expect on this tour:
“The music we’re doing now works well in quiet places like theaters and performing art centers. We still don’t use a program or a set list so we don’t know what we’ll do until we do it. Please do not expect old songs. Many singers my age do a retrospective; this show is not like that. It’s mostly stuff made up in the last 3 and 4 years.
Some of the songs presented might be in different languages; this is not to be esoteric or clever, it’s because the different languages help me express different feelings sometimes.”
