The trio behind EELS and When Horses Would Run come through Chattanooga in April. 4/17

Austin’s Being Dead doesn’t fit neatly into any category. Their music twists surf rock, freak pop, and garage punk into something entirely their own.

Their 2023 debut, When Horses Would Run, landed on multiple year-end lists, and their latest album, EELS, is just as restless—16 tracks that shift between warped campfire songs and distortion-fueled bursts of noise.

On April 17, Being Dead brings the fun to Chattanooga for a show at Cherry Street Tavern.

Tickets are $15 and available here.

Don’t wait. This one will sell out.

Juli Keller, Cody Dosier, and Nicole Roman-Johnston formed Being Dead in Austin, first as a duo, now as a trio. Their latest record, EELS, produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The War on Drugs, Swans, Mountain Goats), pushes their sound even further, pulling in sharp turns and left-field choices.

Some songs feel raw and jagged, others unravel like surreal lullabies. “Firefighters” hits with pummeling guitar, while “Dragons II” keeps things lo-fi and unpolished, recorded straight onto a hand-held tape machine.

Their live shows follow the same rule: no rules. They don’t stick to setlists, and they don’t play it safe.

Fans of Animal Collective, Neutral Milk Hotel, or the Beach Boys’ weirder moments will find something to latch onto, but no two performances are the same.

If you like bands that keep you guessing, you really don’t want to miss this one.
