MULT unveils debut EP Back Around, pushing their sound into new territory with heavier influences.
Chattanooga shoegaze quintet MULT steps into new territory with their debut EP, Back Around. This five-track release showcases the band’s evolution by integrating heavier alt-rock and post-hardcore influences while retaining the massive, atmospheric wall of sound that often defines shoegaze.
Each track carves out its own identity, with grungy guitars occasionally emerging from the blur, creating intense moments of clarity. Standout tracks “Ashen” and “Cardinal” exemplify this approach.
It’s reminiscent of DIIV’s Deceiver, where the band’s shoegaze/dreampop sound shifted to a darker and more intense style.
The EP’s highlight comes with its title track, “Back Around.” This nearly five-minute song combines acoustic and slide guitar with eerie, affected backing vocals.
Its refrain, ‘what goes away always comes back around, changing shape, always getting found,’ is a slow-burn that grows more resonant with each listen.
The slowcore and folk-adjacent undertones of this closing track showcase MULT’s growth and deliver the perfect closing statement to an impressive release.
