John “Papa” Gros brings New Orleans flair to Miller Plaza this Friday, June 7, at 8 PM for the third week of the Nightfall Music Series.
For more than three decades, New Orleans native John “Papa” Gros has shared his hometown’s musical heritage with the world. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Gros embodies its musical spirit, melding funk, rock, jazz, and blues into an unmistakable sound.
Gros’ career began as a sideman for iconic New Orleans musicians like George Porter Jr. and Snooks Eaglin.
In 2000, he formed the acclaimed funk group Papa Grows Funk, which performed weekly at the Maple Leaf Bar and released six albums.
After the band’s dissolution in 2013, Gros resumed his solo career, releasing River’s On Fire in 2016 and Central City in 2020. Central City features contributions from legendary musicians and fellow New Orleanians Ivan Neville, Herlin Riley, and George Porter Jr.
Gros’ solo records underscore his prowess as a songwriter, while his live shows have become legendary showcases of his funky musicianship that captures the energy and joy of night out in New Orleans
