The band’s debut single is a shimmery banger that hearkens back to the golden age of college rock.
It takes just seconds to fall in love with The Banshees‘ debut single, “On The Bridge.” Led by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter John Daley, an Irish immigrant, The Banshees also feature guitarist Jeff Grizzard, bassist Joel Krautstrunk, drummer Grant Fletcher, and keyboardist Phil Moody.
Though this is their recording debut, the band formed in March 2023 and has gigged around town extensively, including a performance on WUTC’s Live in the Library, which you can listen to here.
Fans can catch them live on August 30th at Barrelhouse Ballroom, performing alongside two excellent local bands, Land Camera and In The Company of Wolves.
“On The Bridge” is a vibrant jangle pop anthem echoing the melodic charm of R.E.M., featuring shimmering guitars and a propulsive, driving rhythm. Its lush riffs and doomy, cryptic lyrics capture the essence of ’80s alternative rock:
There were no elections on the bridge
Just some quiet rejections on the bridge
If you keep living in the past that’s where you’ll stay
Who knows what he’s talking about do you?
The song adds a touch of modern flair with moments of solo guitar riffs and a slowing chiming riff that brings the track to a close. The upbeat tempo and layered textures create a nostalgic yet invigorating sound, leaving us excited to hear more from this band.
The Banshees have announced a second single, “For What It’s Worth,” to be released this summer.
“On The Bridge” is available on all streaming platforms. You can listen to it below.
