Intimate concert series Quiet City debuts at Vagabond Barber Co., showcasing Chattanooga’s top songwriters in unique listening-focused settings.
There are lots of great places in Chattanooga to hear live, loud music. Cherry Street Tavern, JJ’s, and Barrelhouse Ballroom are all terrific venues for rock, metal, punk, and other flavors of full-volume music. But if you’re in the market for a quiet evening of quiet music, you’ve got fewer choices.
Part of that is economics. Smaller, intimate shows don’t sell as many tickets. Those audiences tend to be older, more chill, and less likely to drive-up the venue’s profit margin by crushing tons of beers during the show.
From a venue’s perspective, it makes sense not to host these kinds of shows. But when it comes to cultivating a rich music scene, these kinds of shows are an absolute necessity.
That’s why the Quiet City pop-up concert series was created.
“I love a good loud rock show as much as anyone,” said event organizer Cody Ray. “But there are some kinds of music that require the audience to be quiet and listen. Nobody would talk during a jazz concert or an opera because it would distract the audience and the artist. I feel like there are so many great singer/songwriters here in Chattanooga who would thrive in that same kind of environment.”
Debut show at Vagabond Barber Co.
Quiet City’s first concert will be held on Thursday September 5th at Vagabond Barber Company, a vintage barbershop that was painstakingly restored by owner David Gedman. On the surface it would seem like an old 1950’s barbershop, if you look more closely you’ll find anachronistic details from many eras of American history.
“Everything at Vagabond Barber Company tells a story,” said Cody Ray. “This concert will be a fun way to experience the shop because you’ll have plenty of time to walk around and check out all the details.”
Meet the Performers
Randy Steele
Randy Steele will headline the night. While he’s probably best known for shredding banjo with his full bluegrass band, lately Randy’s been leaning into his songwriter side and performing more solo shows where audiences can really appreciate his lyrics and storytelling.
Tigris Nevans and Joshua Cruce
Also performing will be Tigris Nevans and Joshua Cruce. Tigris hails from Rhea County and is a regular performer on the Southern Belle Riverboat, where she likes to mix music with local history.
Joshua Cruce is a recent arrival in Chattanooga who writes songs that are so conceptually rich and narratively complex that they feel less like songs and more like movies.
