Signs Following blends eclectic sounds with lo-fi charm on debut release, earning a spot on Rolling Stone’s playlist.
Chattanooga experimental folk project Signs Following released its self-titled debut album last week, an eight-track trip that blends lush textures with thoughtful songwriting.
The band celebrated the release with a packed show at The Woodshop.
Originally a solo project by singer-songwriter Josh Mays, Signs Following has since expanded into a full band, now featuring Ben Johnson, Monica Wright, and John Hooker—each respected in the local music scene and known for their work in various Chattanooga-based projects.
The album showcases a diverse array of instruments, including lap steel, organ, violin, glockenspiel, gongs, singing bowls, and wind chimes. Despite its charming lo-fi production, the sound is carefully crafted, evoking comparisons to the more structured work of Mount Eerie and early Akron/Family.
Two instrumental tracks, “(teneral)” and “(sunsoil),” stand out for their curious blend of eerie and engaging atmospheres. Both are extremely well-crafted, showcasing an attention to detail even in wordless compositions.
Following the album’s release, Rolling Stone featured the track “Get Born” on its weekly playlist, “All the Songs You Need to Know This Week.”
