SUMAC—featuring Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom), Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), and Brian Cook (Russian Circles)—has built a reputation for an uncompromising sound that refuses to stay in one lane.

Formed in 2014, their debut album The Deal set the tone for the band’s intense sound, melding dense, chaotic compositions with moments of ambient, introspection.

Since then, SUMAC has released several critically acclaimed albums, including What One Becomes, which delved into themes of anxiety and internal struggle, and Love in Shadow, which explored the spiritual dimensions of love.

This year’s release, The Healer, proves their ability to shift between blistering metal and moments of unexpected tenderness, all while keeping listeners on edge.

Joining them are Kowloon Walled City, a San Francisco-based four-piece with a distinctive take on noise rock. Their sound is dark, heavy, and brooding, with a dirge-like quality that draws you in.

The band’s most recent record Piecework (2021) blends post-hardcore aggression with spacey sludge metal.

And the night kicks off with Trigger Object, the new project from Portland’s Veronica “Vern” Avola. Inspired by paranormal reality TV, Trigger Object delivers a collection of metaphysical sound experiments that add a weird and wonderful layer to the night.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of SUMAC or new to the world of experimental metal, this is going to be a powerful night at JJ’s Bohemia.
