Fronted by John Darnielle, The Mountain Goats have carved out a unique place in contemporary music. Starting with lo-fi beginnings in Claremont, California, the band has grown into a fuller, more polished sound while also relocating to North Carolina.
But they’ve always kept Darnielle’s narrative-driven lyrics at the heart of their music.
The band are on tour supporting their 2023 album, Jenny from Thebes, which revisits characters from their 2002 record, All Hail West Texas. All Hail West Texas was a turning point for the band, marking the last album John Darnielle recorded using his signature Panasonic boombox—until 2020’s Songs for Pierre Chuvin.
Here’s the music video for “Murder at the 18th Street Garage” from Jenny from Thebes below:

They explore themes of personal struggle, survival, and resilience. Even as their sound has grown, the band’s signature lyrical intensity remains a constant.
This Southern U.S. tour will cover nine cities and will be the first set of shows without bassist Peter Hughes, who recently left The Mountain Goats after 28 years.
The historic Walker Theatre offers an ideal setting for any show, and the intimate yet powerful energy of The Mountain Goats makes it a perfect band for this cozy venue.
For those who’ve followed The Mountain Goats through their prolific three-decade career, or those discovering them for the first time, this show is not to be missed.
Tickets for the show are already available through presale. General admission goes live on Friday, September 20, at 10 AM.
