Women of Noise Fest: Innovative Music Showcase Debuts September 20-21

A Free Two-Day Celebration of Experimental Noise and Ambient Music, Curated by Chattanooga Noise Night

The Women of Noise Fest Vol. 1 debuts Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, at Stove Works art space. The fest celebrates the women driving noise music—a genre that spans electronic, ambient, and experimental sounds.

Co-creators Dora Robertson and Aaron Cole, inspired by the positive response to a one-off “Women of Noise Night” last September, decided to expand the concept into a two-day event. While Robertson co-created the festival, Aaron Cole and Brooks Mendenhall organize the monthly Chattanooga Noise Night series.

The fest will feature 10 artists across both nights, offering a mix of experimental sounds.

“Noise” here is expansive. It could be the droning synths of Ipek Eginli, the dreamy tape loops of Slow Blink, the cinematic darkwave of GILTVEIN, or, as Robertson highlights, something new from Telefronetic—a Knoxville artist incorporating a theremin with effects pedals. “That’s something Chattanooga Noise Night has never seen before,” says Robertson.

A musician herself, Robertson will perform at the fest with her power electronics/industrial noise project Leperwitch. She hopes the event shines a light on the diverse contributions women make to this sometimes ambiguous genre.

“No two artists sound alike or do the same kind of noise, and everyone comes from very different walks of life,” she notes. “How we all met in the middle is that we decided extreme music was our preferred medium for self-expression.”

Keeping with the DIY ethos of Chattanooga Noise Night, the fest is free and open to everyone. Donations are encouraged, with all proceeds going directly to the artists—some of whom are traveling to participate.

Robertson also wants attendees to be fully engaged: “Every artist here deserves respect, and that entails watching their performances and really paying attention to what they’re doing.”

She also recommends earplugs: “Because things are going to get loud. Very loud.”

The lineup is a mix of familiar names from Chattanooga Noise Night shows, with a few newcomers added.

Highlights include Ipek Eginli, Slow Blink, GILTVEIN, and Leperwitch, among many others.
